At the Castle Law Offices, we understand that the vast majority of our clients have never filed for bankruptcy and do not know much about the actual process. While we will take care of all aspects of your legal case, we will need information about you and your finances so that we can complete the required paperwork and help you to get a fresh start.

Many of our clients want to know what they will need to bring with them during an initial consultation. Although you aren’t required to bring anything, and although you are welcome to come to our office with nothing more than your questions, bringing documentation and information with you to your first meeting may help speed up the process and may help your Illinois bankruptcy attorney better understand you case.

What should you bring to your initial meeting with a bankruptcy attorney?

•    Bring a written list of questions. You might think that you can remember any questions that you have, but you could forget something during the meeting. This is your best chance to talk with an attorney face-to-face and to understand everything that you need to know. Write down your questions and go through them with your attorney.

•    Bring a list of your assets and debts. While this won’t be the complete or official list, it will give your attorney a good idea of your current financial situation and what type of bankruptcy will be best for you. In addition, it will also give you and your family a better idea of your financial situation.

•    Bring a list of creditors. Again, while this list doesn’t have to be complete, it will give your attorney a better picture of your situation and whether or not bankruptcy is the right choice for you. This also allows the bankruptcy lawyer to see if there is a conflict of interest.

•    If your home is in foreclosure, bring as much information as you can regarding the issue, including any documents that you have received. It is vital for your attorney to understand where you are in the foreclosure process as you proceed with your bankruptcy.
