After Missouri or Illinois Bankruptcy, Is Getting a New Job Impossible?

Some employers are performing credit checks before they hire new employees. With such a tough job market and so many qualified people looking for jobs, some use credit scores as another criterion on which to judge their many applicants. Does that mean that bankruptcy can prevent you from getting a job?

Let’s get one thing out in the open: if you are at the point of needing to file bankruptcy, your credit is probably not in good shape to begin with. There typically isn’t much credit worthiness for bankruptcy to damage. Rather, bankruptcy may improve your credit score at the close of your case so the act of filing a case with the St. Louis bankruptcy attorney of your choice probably isn’t going to alter your chances of getting a job. In fact, it may even help you.

“But James! How could Missouri or Illinois bankruptcy help me in the job market?”

For starters, in addition to getting you a fresh start, bankruptcy can help you wipe the slate clean with regards to your credit report. With good payment behavior and responsible spending, your credit score should improve. Can you imagine how much easier it would be to pay your bills on time if you were able to eliminate large amounts of debt. Out of the 30,000 clients that I have helped, most of them have seen their credit score improve after the close of their Missouri or Illinois bankruptcy.

Also, you should eliminate any thoughts that bankruptcy is for dead beat debtors. This is simply not true and we should all do our part to eliminate this idea of a debtor’s prison. So there is no need to give that impression to a potential employer. Hold your head up high and be confident in your decision to take action and become a problem-solver. Unfortunately, there are a lot of myths about bankruptcy out there that people believe to be true, including the idea that you are a bad person for filing bankruptcy. Filing bankruptcy is actually one of the most responsible decisions that you can make. Getting protection from foreclosure, credit card debt help, and relief from your creditors prevents your family from suffering under debt and helps them get back to a happy, normal life.

Finally, you are not your bankruptcy. The point of filing with a St. Louis bankruptcy attorney is to stop letting your life revolve around debt. Most employers are not making hiring decisions based on whether or not you filed for bankruptcy. If it comes up in an interview, defend your position but move on. Your life no longer revolves around debt—and neither should their decision to hire you.

Wondering what other myths may be preventing you from getting the relief you need from debt. Learn that and more in my free Illinois and Missouri bankruptcy book, “Get Out of Debt: Secrets Your Creditors Don’t Want You to Know.”
