Make no mistake about it; the entire country is going through an economic slump. With the housing market collapse, the rising price of oil, and creditors tightening up the restrictions on lines of credit, the financial ground of people all over the country is growing quite shaky.

Recently, Anheuser Busch, the biggest brewer in America and an enormous presence here in St. Louis, was recently bought by InBev, an enormous Belgian company that owns brands such as Stella Artois, Bass Ale and Becks. Anyone who has been in any business long enough knows that the merger of two companies usually brings words like “Layoffs” and “redundancies,” so St. Louis citizens are justifiably anxious.

One thing to consider is the enormous amount of debt that InBev went into to simply to pay for the acquisition of Anheuser Busch. The overall price of the deal was $52 Billion dollars, and while nobody doubts the ability of this new brewing behemoth to make up that revenue eventually, you have to imagine that they will be cutting costs in the near future to hasten that along.

Although the InBev people made all the appropriate noises about maintaining the A-B structure the way it is, a look at InBev’s behavior with similar beer acquisitions leads us to believe that this InBev won’t be “maintaining” much of anything.

In 2004, when AmBev purchased the Canadian beer LaBatt, they had no problems shutting down a brewery and letting go twenty percent of its white collar employees. If InBev finds that it is more cost effective to brew Budweiser somewhere else, then we can’t imagine them keeping all the breweries here. Similarly, if they find that it’s redundant to have A-B headquarters in a town without as many breweries, then we can’t imagine them leaving the current situation as it is. This means fewer jobs in St. Louis, in both the white and blue collar categories.

It also wouldn’t be a stretch to think that InBev, as big as it is, also took somewhat of a beating in the stock market lately. After all, every major corporation invests some of its profits in the markets, which have essentially gone south over the past few months. InBev probably will be in even more of a cost cutting mood.

This makes for a great deal of uncertainty for the citizens of St. Louis. If at all possible, you should dedicate yourself to shoring up your financial situation. Step one would be trying as hard as you can to get out of debt, starting with any and all credit cards. Next you should calculate all of your expenses for at least three months and try to save up that amount in a savings account. The point of this is to make sure that you have something saved up to keep you from having to use credit cards if you lose your job. Getting a new job usually takes about three months, so having at least enough to cover your expenses for that period of time should be a priority.

In the event that your financial problems become too much to handle, you should consider the option of bankruptcy.
