I am sometimes surprised to hear just how many people are worried about renting after their bankruptcy or foreclosure. In most cases, renting is not a problem. Most renters are interested in knowing you have enough income to pay the rent—not if you’ve had a bankruptcy or not.
In fact, filing bankruptcy is one of the most responsible things you can do. It shows that you could recognize a situation you could no longer handle and asked for help. It shows that you know what it takes to get yourself and your family out of financial trouble. And it shows that you are ready to get your life back on track.
A landlord knows that someone who has been through bankruptcy now has control over all of their bills—and most likely will provide them with a steady rent check. You are often your harshest critic so it may be natural to think that your financial past may prevent you from having a successful future but the opposite is really true. A bankruptcy does not haunt you; it actually helps you get your life on a path to success.
